The story of the Titanic is also a reflection of the class struggle of the time.  According to some firsthand reports, gates separating the third-class spaces from the other classes were kept locked even after the collision. Here are the numbers, about 42% of the second-class passengers aboard the Titanic survived and about 25% of the third-class passengers made it. In the end, more than 1,500 people perished. Aside from the crew, which had about 700 fatalities, third class suffered the greatest loss: of approximately 710, only some 174 survived.  In some accounts, claims that passengers in steerage were prevented from boarding lifeboats but these were largely dispelled.
