First-class passengers were of course billeted at the upper decks of the ship. According to some firsthand reports, gates separating the third-class spaces from the other classes were kept locked even after the collision. Here is another review of the numbers: 42% of the second-class passengers aboard the Titanic survived and about 25% of the third-class passengers made it. Then, 60% of first-class passengers survived the tragedy.  Although majority of the dead were crew members and third-class passengers, many of the era’s most prominent and wealthiest families lost members during the tragedy.
